Congo Square Theatre Company Celebrates The Holidays With The 3rd Annual Nativity Tribute Dec 09

Congo Square Theatre Company is excited to announce a full production of its signature holiday event, now in its 3rd year. Since 2015, Congo Square has produced A NATIVITY TRIBUTE, a signature musical concert that pays tribute to the theatre’s previous productions of the Nativity story. The tribute is a community-driven initiative and partnership with Studio One Dance Theater, and has been seen by sold out audiences at the DuSable Museum of African American History, on Chicago’s South side. This year, Congo Square raises the stakes and a commitment to producing world class art for underserved communities by expanding to the south side and suburbs with performances at Governor’s State University and the DuSable Museum. TaRon Patton, Congo Square’s Executive Director and the show’s Director offers: “This is an example of what a community-driven initiative should be. It’s our 3rd year and each year has gotten bigger and better, going from a concert to a full production this year, based on the foundation built over the last two years with the concert experience.” In this year’s Nativity Tribute, a young angel comes to heaven and doesn’t know his purpose. He learns of his greatness and purpose as an angel through the biblical narrative being told by the angels of the Nativity. “There is so much ambiguity with our black men right now in society. Both shows feature the ceremony of black men looking for their purpose.” She continues: “It was important for us to touch this part of our story because young black men between 19-23 are the most endangered in our communities.” The show features an array of soulful singers from past productions, like Candace Edwards, Kalind Haynes, Dawn Bless, Byron Willis, Faith Howard, Jazelle Morriss and house music sensation Jon Pierce; with newcomers, Qiana McNary and Julian Otis. Artistic Associate and award-winning actor/playwright Kelvin Roston, Jr. rounds out the cast as the angel Gabriel. Musical direction and composition is led by Artistic Associate Jaret Landon, most known for composing the music for the Oscar-award nominated film, Fences. Performances: The DuSable Museum December 9, 2017 3pm and 7:30pm The $25 ticket price for all seats are graciously provided by The Chicago Community Trust and Target.
